Resilient Conversations
Have a Vision for Your Future and Identify the Steps to Get There!
It all started when…
Resilient people know that having a healthy support system is a critical aspect of resilience, so they take the lead in stacking their teams with the most supportive people they can find.
We cannot choose everyone in our lives. We get who we get with our parents, siblings, teachers, coaches and bosses. We can, however, seek out friends and mentors to support us, and finding people who see and bring out the best in us gives us a huge advantage in being successful and happy. Captains of pick-up dodge ball games get to choose who is on their teams, so they pick the best players. Then they lead their teams by communicating what they need from each player, and they model being excellent players themselves. It’s a three-step process:
Choose the best players;
Communicate what you need from each one;
Model being excellent yourself.
If you treat your personal support team the same way, you will find yourself surrounded by people who actually feel supportive and who inspire you to be the best version of yourself.
What qualities do you look for in a friend, and how do you or how could you bring new friends with those qualities into your life?
What qualities do you look for in a mentor, and how do you or could you bring new friends with those qualities into your life?
In what ways are you a good friend to others?
Can you describe a time when you did something to support a friend that no one else would do?
Can you describe a time when a friend or mentor told you something or gave you advice that was hard to hear but that really helped you?
Why We Teach Resilience
A resilient mindset is the key that unlocks a child's potential.
In life, resilience is the ability to successfully adapt to adversity, trauma, and significant sources of stress. In sports, resilience is about overcoming challenges, bouncing back after losses, performing well under stress, and constantly striving to be better. Without resilience kids are unable to fully integrate even the best coaching. With resilience kids are able to be their best selves and succeed in athletic, academic, creative, social and ultimately professional endeavors.
Our Conversation Starter emails highlight a different skill each week. The skills cycle through the "Seven Fundamentals of Resilience" from The MacDermott Method's evidence-based model. Visit our website for more information.
